5 Fun and Weird Facts about Coffee
Everybody loves coffee, but not everyone knows about the unique and fun side of coffee. Here are five of the most fun and weird facts that you can impress your friends with.
1. It Used to Be Eaten
While most of us enjoy coffee as a beverage now, it wasn’t always that way. Coffee was original designed to be eaten. It all started when a farmer in Ethiopia noticed that his goats were eating a certain plant and acting very strangely. It turns out that this was a coffee plant, and when the farmer ate from it, he felt strong and energized. Needless to say, many people followed suit and ate coffee to gain energy. It wasn’t for years later that it was ground up and brewed in the way that we see it now.
2. It’s the 2nd Most Traded Commodity
Only being beat out by oil, there is nothing in this world that’s traded as much as coffee. When you consider all the different types of grain as well as flavors, this probably won’t come as a surprise. However, being second in the world means that coffee beats out natural gas as well as gold for global trade. That’s pretty impressive, to say the least.
3. The Most Cups of Coffee Consumed in 7 Hours is…
There is a world record in place by a very daring coffee-lover who once drank 82 cups of coffee in 7 consecutive hours. While it’s something worth bragging about, it’s also been noted that drinking too much coffee can kill you. A lethal dose has been set at 100 cups, so don’t try too hard to break this record and just enjoy the drink.
4. Dark Roasted Coffee is Less Caffeinated
If you enjoy your dark roasted coffee more than a medium roast, you’re actually getting less caffeine. When coffee is roasted, the caffeine is burned as well. This means that longer roasts have less caffeine in them when compared to other types of coffee.
5. The US Consumes the Most Coffee
The US is the largest consumer of coffee, taking in 1/3 of all the coffee that is exported. New Yorkers take in the most coffee in the states, but most coffee drinkers have about 3 cups of coffee a day. On the larger scale of things, that translates to about 450,000,000 cups of coffee a day in the US alone.
